Similarities among venomous animals in chelicerata. Panel A shows the phylogenetic tree compiled from published sources [9]. Data regarding protein families in ticks, spiders and scorpions was collected from [2], as well as protein families characterized in recent studies. Panel B shows a spider’s defense/hunting and a tick’s questing positions (photos are not in real dimensional scale). The images depict similarities in attitude, angle of flexion in posterior legs (30˚), middle legs (arrows), and first pair of legs exposing the respective sensory organs (white circles).
