  1. Number of sequences (N) present in our 582 sequences alignment, divided into three length classes (based on clade-wise alignment and not on the total vertebrate alignment). "Complete" indicates sequences included in the alignment for which the coding region of Rag1 has been entirely sequenced (bold numbers, [see Additional file 1]). "2000 bp < N<total length" indicates the number of sequences of more than 2000 base pairs, but not full length. "1000 bp < N<2000 bp" indicates the number of sequences between 1000 and 2000 base pairs long.
